Qatar Airways Acquires 25% Stake in Airlink

Qatar Airways Group acquired a 25% stake in Airlink, Southern Africa’s leading independent regional carrier. This investment aligns with the multi-award-winning airline’s ongoing strategy to expand its operations across the African continent.

The acquisition of a stake in Airlink—an airline servicing over 45 destinations across 15 African countries—will enhance the existing code-sharing partnership between the two carriers. This deal strengthens Qatar Airways’ growth strategy in Africa and solidifies its role as a key contributor to the continent’s economic success.

Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, Group Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Airways, commented: “Our investment in Airlink underscores the critical role Africa plays in our future business strategy. This partnership reflects our confidence in Airlink, a company known for its resilience, agility, and strong financial standing. It also highlights our belief in Africa’s vast potential, which we are excited to help realize.”

Airlink’s Chief Executive, Rodger Foster, stated: “Having Qatar Airways as an equity partner is a significant endorsement of Airlink and reinforces our commitment to the markets we serve and those we plan to enter. This transaction will drive growth by creating efficiencies of scale, increasing our capacity, and expanding our marketing reach. This investment will also enhance all existing airline partnerships that Airlink has developed over the years.”

The partnership between Qatar Airways and Airlink will also work towards aligning both carriers’ loyalty programs—Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Airlink Skybucks.

Currently, Qatar Airways operates flights to 29 destinations in Africa. The airline has seen notable growth in the market, adding new destinations to its network since December 2020. New cities include Abidjan, Abuja, Accra, Harare, Kano, Luanda, Lusaka, and Port Harcourt, while Cairo and Alexandria routes have been resumed.
