Passenger carbon intensity improved by 45.3% for Etihad, compared to 2019.
Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has released its annual environmental report, highlighting the company’s commitment and progress toward achieving its sustainability goals.
In 2023, the airline improved passenger carbon intensity by 45.3% compared to its 2019 baseline, reaching a carbon intensity of 475 grams of CO₂ per Revenue Tonne Kilometer (RTK) for passengers.
Etihad’s strategy focuses on reducing emissions through industry-specific actions, adhering to voluntary roadmaps and frameworks, collaborating with UAE industrial partners, ensuring transparency and proactivity on environmental issues, and continuously updating its strategic targets.
Etihad’s Chief Executive Officer, Antonoaldo Neves, said: “We remain focused on a strategy that supports change, growth, and economic development. We believe that sustainable aviation development is achieved through many small efforts combined. Our comprehensive and coordinated approach aims to decarbonise aviation and mitigate its negative impacts.
“Rapidly phasing out fossil fuels in aviation is extremely challenging and requires a complete industry redesign. This transformation will occur gradually over time. With air travel expected to continue growing, we are committed to balancing carbon reduction with commercial demand to meet future needs responsibly.”
Etihad Airways’ 2023 environmental report highlights key achievements in sustainability. The Fuel Efficiency Working Group reduced CO₂ emissions by over 35,000 tonnes, equivalent to saving more than 11,000 tonnes of fuel. More than 1,000 passengers offset 1.5 million kilograms of CO₂ through the CarbonClick initiative. The airline also improved passenger carbon intensity by 45.3% compared to 2019, reaching 475 grams of CO₂ per Revenue Tonne Kilometer (RTK). The Boeing Jeppesen FliteDeck Advisor saved 8,389 tonnes of CO₂ and 2,655 tonnes of fuel. In terms of cost efficiency, Etihad reduced cost per Available Seat Kilometer by 8% and improved fleet utilization by 11%. The airline’s sustainability efforts included eliminating over 233 million single-use plastic items, planting 182,000 mangrove trees, and sourcing 36% of onboard products locally. The introduction of the Dry Wash method saved up to 5,500 litres of water per widebody aircraft wash. Etihad’s modern fleet, with an average age of 7.5 years, further supports its environmental goals. The airline also maintained a Stage 2 rating in the IATA Environmental Assessment Programme, reinforcing its commitment to environmental excellence.
